5 Things That Might Surprise You About Eating Disorders, Weight and Food

Eating disorders are more common than you might think, and you might not know why. Eating disorders affect anyone, of any age. There are more than just the ones you hear about all the time, anorexia and bulimia. Some of the other types of eating disorders include binge eating disorder, atypical anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa of a low frequency and/or limited duration, and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Many people stereotype eating disorders to the severely underweight and overweight population, but this is not true. An estimated 30 million individuals suffer from some sort of eating disorder. How we speak about eating, food, and weight plays a large part into these conditions and overall health. Self-image plays a major role in our mental health, and negative thoughts over your weight and body shape can easily affect your day to day life. Our thought process on what we eat also plays a major role into this. We are living in a society where there is “good food” and “bad food”. Food gives you energy to function each day, regardless of what type of food it is. Eating disorders are the leading cause of death pertaining to mental illness. Sadly, many of these deaths go without care or treatment from a health professional. We need to raise our awareness of eating disorders, and let go of the stigma that it has always been classified as.

Key Points:

  • 1There are many forms of eating disorders and it affects ‘up to 30 million people’.
  • 2People need to be more accepting of eating disorders.
  • 3People with eating disorders can look completely normal.

The truth is that eating disorders do not discriminate; people of any race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status may be affected. These illnesses affect men, women, children, and the elderly.
