6 Serious Pains You Shouldn”t Ignore

There are many occasions where we don’t take a headache or a slight fever seriously. We think it will pass and when it does, we don’t give it another thought. But there are aches and pains that shouldn’t be ignored. Here are the 6 most serious pains we shouldn’t neglect.

Paralysis of the limbs, dizziness, slurred speech, double vision, tingling, and numbness are signs of a stroke. Arteries supply oxygen to the brain. A stroke is the result of the brain tissues dying due to blockage or rupture of arteries. The area of the brain that is affected determines a stroke. The damage to a large artery might result in paralysis of the body on one side and the loss of speech. On the other hand, if a small artery is damaged, one of the limbs may be paralyzed. If the above symptoms are noticed, emergency medical help is needed immediately. Usually treatment needs to be administered within 3 hours of the appearance of the symptoms. The sooner a patient is treated, lesser are the chances of permanent brain damage.

Chest pain, pain in jaw, neck and arm, shortness of breath, nausea, cold sweat, weakness, vomiting are signs of a heart attack. In the presence of these symptoms, 911 should be dialled immediately. While waiting for help, the patient should chew a full strength aspirin, if not allergic to it. Doing this prevents heart muscles from being damaged. Please remember, not all heart attacks involve chest pain. Lots of women, diabetics and old people have, what are called, painless heart attacks. Their symptoms are: weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, heart pounding, sweating, and shortness of breath.

A tenderness and pain behind your lower leg, shortness of breath, coughing up blood and chest pain are symptoms of a blood clot in your leg. This could be very dangerous especially if one has been sitting for a long time in a plane or a car. A blood clot in the leg should be treated. If coughing up of blood and shortness of breath accompany the clot, it could mean that a piece of the clot has broken and travelled to the lungs. This could be fatal and the patient should be taken to the hospital immediately.

Blood in the urine without any pain could mean cancer of the ureter, bladder or prostate. Normally, blood in the urine is accompanied by pain, which is why people rush to the doctor. But if the bleeding is painless, people tend to take it lightly. But this may be the only chance doctors get to treat cancer while it is small enough to be painless.

Asthma attacks can kill. If, after 6-8 hours, the attack doesn’t improve or worsen, then the patient should be taken to the hospital. Prolonged asthma attacks can lead to chest muscle fatigue and death. If, during a long attack, the person seems to be getting calmer, this is not the case. Carbon dioxide builds up in the brain causing the patient to feel drowsy and sedated. The patient might lose the will to stop breathing.

Severe headaches could be a symptom of meningitis, stroke, brain tumor, aneurysm, blood vessel inflammation. There are a few headaches that need immediate medical attention.

  1. A headache known as a thunderclap headache. This is because it comes on suddenly with great severity.
  2. A headache that is followed with fever, seizures, pain while chewing, weakness, numbness, rash, speech difficulty, vision changes.
  3. A headache that starts or gets worse after an injury to the head.
