Burning Calories in the Information Age

The dawn of the Information Age has given us more labor saving devices than any other period in history. Along with this knowledge we have settled into a more sedentary lifestyle. We rush to an office, only to spend the next 8 hours sitting in front of a computer screen, just as you are doing now. But the bottom line is that many of us need to lose a few pounds. The only way to do that is to burn more calories than you consume. So let’s add some calorie burning activities to our daily life, below are a few that I came up with.
– Forget about the elevator and use the stairs.
– Take the stairs two at a time.
– Instead of shoving your chair, lift it bending your knees and keeping your back straight. We all need to push in our chair when we get up from our desk or table so let’s make it count.
– Hide your remote control and get up and down to change the channels.
– Walk your dog and keep pace. Your dog will love you.
– Take a Frisbee along and play in the park with your dog.
– Park in the furthest parking space. I do this all the time much to the dismay of my husband and children.
– Instead of sitting in the stands while watching your kids play at a ballgame, try pacing the field instead. Even standing burns more calories than sitting.
– Clean your house (changing bedding is great exercise!). Every time I want to curse my heavy vacuum I remember the good toning my arms are getting pushing and pulling that heavy thing around (a silver lining). And there are a lot of weeks that I use the calorie burning benefit to motivate me to get after that housework.
– Take a brisk ten minute walk each morning, afternoon and evening. I especially like a walk mid day, I have been at my computer for quite awhile by then and am ready for a little stretching. Walk inside your office building if the weather is bad or around your office if it is nice outside.
– Plant a vegetable garden. You’ll have all that terrific food to eat and exercise in the process! Nothing like all those squats pulling weeds.
– Take your kids to the pool and you get in the water too. Walking in the water is great. That water creates resistance and that burns more calories than walking alone.
– Learn a new dance. Moving to music doesn’t feel like exercise, it just feels fun.
– Join a gym.
– Join a lunch hour aerobic class.
– Jump in place with feet together. Touch the left and right heels alternately in between jumps with both feet. If you still enjoy jump roping go for it.
– Bicycling gives a great whole body exercise. Begin with short jaunts around your neighborhood. Each day widen your travels until you are able to bicycle for at least a mile.
– Walking need not be a chore. Visit your local museums and art galleries spending time browsing the exhibits. Not only will you add additional exercise with the walk, you’ll improve your mind! I will not be responsible for the money you spend if you choose to walk the mall. Every little bit of exercise helps keep those calories from stacking on our bodies where we don’t want them. Get talking with your friends and see what ideas you can come up with. Then pick a few and get started. Check out the two calculators on our site, the calories burned calculator and the lose one pound calculator to find out how many calories you burn or need to burn to lose those extra pounds. We have another page that explains how to calculate your calories burned each day.
