Sound Sleep May Help You Junk the Junk Food

It is a regular occurrence in my household… My husband returns from a long day at work and I get cooking. My husband always eats a second serving and then when we have finally wrestled the kids to bed, it is very normal for us to reach for the ice cream, chocolate or candy. It has definitely become a habit.

A new study shows that getting better sleep may curb the cravings for junk food. The study showed that those who were extra tired and stressed when they returned from work, were more likely to reach for not only unhealthy options but in bigger quantities. The study says that if a longer and more restful time of sleep occurs before going to work, it is less likely that these bad habits will form. It seems that the unhealthy eating habits are more likely to form in people who have stressful days. Meal time serving sizes become bigger and junk food is more likely to be consumed. If a person has had a more restful night’s sleep, they are more likely to be able to deal with the stresses of the day without resorting to comforts such as food.

This study was carried out in China among a group of people in highly stressful jobs.

Key Points:

  • 1In a study involving 235 men and woman, researchers found a significant link involving stress from work and sleep to how it can determine eating habits.
  • 2Poor sleep the night before affected the participants in maintaining and handling stress the next day.
  • 3The stress from their jobs affected their self-control and contributed to negative thinking, which linked to poorer eating choices.

A good night’s sleep can make workers replenished and feel vigorous again, which may make them better able to deal with stress at work the next day and less vulnerable to unhealthy eating
