What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are defined as a group of conditions in which either excessive eating, or excessive starvation may occur. Pre-teens, teenagers and young adults are usually afflicted by eating disorders, and they are as common as 3 out of every 100 school or university students.

What Can Cause An Eating Disorder?

Most people who suffer from eating disorders also suffer from some sort of obsession or compulsion, depression or even high levels of stress. Teenagers and young adults usually have an obsession with being a certain weight or reaching a certain dress size, and they try to lose excessive weight in an unhealthy way.

Types of Eating Disorders:

Here are a few eating disorders that are common:

Anorexia Nervosa:

This is an eating disorder in which fear of putting on weight or obsession with trying to lose weigh can make a person severely underweight due to excessive starvation. This eating disorder is very dangerous if not treated and can even lead to death in some cases.

Bulimia:

Bulimia is also referred to as Bulimia Nervosa. Bulimia is characterized by periods of excessive eating, and then purging oneself to get rid of all the food from ones system. Bulimia is also an eating disorder which is developed due to body image issues and a person indulges in this behavior to lose weight. This disorder is also very dangerous as excessive vomiting can also lead to esophageal rupture.

Binge Eating:

In this disorder, one tends to keep on eating continuously even when one feels continuously full. This eating disorder leads to excessive weight gain and is related to periods of severe depression. There is no purging in this disorder, but shame and feelings of self loathing do develop after periods of binge eating.

Anorexia Athletica:

In this condition, usually a person, (mostly females) over-exercise in order to lose weight, beyond the limits of a normal person. This condition is also potentially life threatening and difficult to treat.
