Why Do Some People Talk In Their Sleep?

Sleep talking, also known as somniloquy, is fairly common but it can be a sign of something more serious.   Sleep talking falls into the “parasomnia” category of sleep disorders

50% of kids talk in their sleep at least once per year.

10% of kids talk in their sleep every day.

67% of adults talk in their sleep at least 4 times per year.

Sleep talking runs in families.

Sleep talking is more common in men.

Sleep talking is not always understandable and can occur during any stage of sleep.   The person sleep talking can appear to be giving a speech or you may be speaking one side of a conversation.   Don’t worry most of the time secrets are not revealed during sleep talking.

Causes of Sleep Talking:   lack of sleep, alcohol or drug use, illness, stress, anxiety or depression.

If your sleep talking isn’t affecting you getting enough sleep or you aren’t experiencing other signs of depression you are probably fine.   But if you are having signs of other health issues you should mention your sleep talking to your health care professional. In rare cases sleep talking can be a sign of nighttime seizures.

Key Points:

  • 1Sleep-talking, otherwise known as “parasomnia”, is a sleep disorder often triggered by alcohol, insufficient sleep, drug use, depression, illness, or stress.
  • 2If you sleep talk on occasion and have no other alarming symptoms, it is most likely nothing to be worried about.
  • 3If you also wake up feeling exhausted or sad, then you should speak to your doctor regarding parasomnia to make sure you don’t have a more serious health condition.

If you talk in your sleep only occasionally and you are not experiencing symptoms of any of the other sleep disorders or health conditions mentioned above, then it’s probably nothing to worry about.
