Secondhand Smoking Tied to Snoring in Kids

That secondhand smoke is dangerous is not new medical news. But the dangers of it continue to spread, as ongoing research investigates deeper and further into the subject. The latest medical research reveals that the children of smokers, children who are exposed to secondhand smoke, increases the chance of those children becoming snorers.

Far from being a benign oddity that is worth only a chuckle or perhaps a closed bedroom door, snoring can be a serious medical problem. Snoring is usually the body expressing difficulty in getting enough oxygen. The snorts and audible deep breaths are the body struggling to breathe deeply enough to maintain basic healthy function, and some snoring is even strong enough to wake not just those near the snoring person, but the snorer as well. This interrupts sleep, which leaves even a person who lays down in a bed for eight or nine hours without enough rest.

Developing snoring at a young age drastically increases the chances of that person, as he or she ages into adulthood, having more severe snoring. Or even developing full sleep apnea. And that can put the person at risk of very serious cardiovascular problems. Secondhand smoke put a child at twice the risk of becoming a snorer than children who did not live with or around smokers. All that from living in an environment where they’re exposed to secondhand smoke.

Key Points:

  • 1Parental smoking may lead to snoring in their children.
  • 2Snoring isn’t cute, and can lead to some serious consequences, like sleep apnea.
  • 3In addition to snoring, child exposure to second hand smoke can lead to a number of other difficult illnesses.

Children exposed to smoke while their mothers were pregnant were almost twice as likely to be habitual snorers.
