Treatment Of Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are easy to treat with proper home care. Sinus infections usually block the nasal passages making it difficult for a person to breathe and also interfere with ones sleep and speech. Treating a sinus infection and making sure that they don”t reoccur requires some home based care that makes sure that it resolves for good.

Treatment Of A Sinus Infection:

Before you begin any treatment at home, it is very important to get your sinus infection checked by a doctor, especially if you have repeated sinus infections. The goal of treatment is to resolve the sinusitis and reduce the inflammation in the sinuses. The infection needs to be cured completely in order for drainage to occur from the sinuses, as this is the only way to open the sinuses completely.

Home Based Remedies

Some home based remedies are harmless to follow, here are some common remedies that can help treat a sinus infection:

Draining The Sinuses With Steam:

The sinuses need to be drained so that they can start healing. Try to inhale steam at least 2 to 4 times a day. This can be done by leaning over a bucket or even a bowl of hot water or using a water steamer. Steam should be inhaled for at least 10 minutes so that the sinuses open properly. A mentholated preparation can be added to the water to help open the sinuses.

Remain Hydrated:

Drink plenty of water in order to remain hydrated. Dehydration always causes weakness and may increase the infection as well.

Medications:

Over-the-counter medicines for pain can help combat fever and pain caused by the sinus infection. Some pain killers such as ibuprofen also help control inflammation. Decongestants help open the sinuses as well and many over-the-counter decongestants are available that can help alleviate the symptoms of a sinus infection.

Nasal Saline Irrigation:

Nasal saline irrigation helps open the sinuses and removes the infection as well. A neti-pot can be used to immediately open the sinuses and irrigate them. A neti pot is small pot with a sprout and a handle. This pot can be made of metal, ceramic and even plastic. Chronic sinusitis can be treated with the help of a neti pot which also helps relieve facial pain, reduces pressure and also reduces the requirement for using antibiotics.
