Hydrocodone vs. Hydromorphone (Differences between Side Effects)

All medications can cause adverse side effects.   Before taking anything you should do your research to know the possibilities of what might go wrong.      The FDA likes to make sure they are safe and that the public has the info it needs to make good choices.

When we are in pain we just want the pain to stop.   Hydrocodone and Hydromorphone are both opioid pain relievers.

Hydrocodone is used for the long term treatment of severe pain.   Hydromorphone is used for management of acute pain.   It is important to take the right medication and know all the side effects.   Do your own research and talk with your doctor.

Hydrocodone side effects:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Slowed breathing and trouble breathing

Hydromorphone side effects:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Sweating
  • Flushing
  • Itching
  • Dry mouth
  • Slowed breathing and trouble breathing

NEVER combine opioids with alcohol or any other depressant.

Opioids while beneficial in controlling pain are often addictive and can have severe withdrawal symptoms when no longer needed.

Key Points:

  • 1Hydrocodone and Hydromorphone are both opioid pain relievers with similar side effects.
  • 2Combining the two of these drugs can result in serious side effects that cause certain health problems and even death.
  • 3Hydrocodone is used for long term treatment of severe pain whereas Hydromorphone is used for acute pain management for moderate to severe cases of pain.

Hydromorphone, like other opioids, stimulates receptors on nerves in the brain to increase the threshold to pain and reduce the perception of pain.
