CBD oil has recently grown in popularity in both human and canine treatments. The oil provides many health benefits with barely any side effects. However, just CBD for dogs is safe, that doesn’t mean that it can’t or won’t interact with other medications that you or your dog may be taking.
It’s crucial to know that CBD oil can enhance the effects of some drugs, but it can also block the actions of other drugs. One example of the blocking effect is similar to what happens when you eat grapefruit and take certain medications – the P450 enzyme is inhibited. This inhibition is caused by the CBD or grapefruit “using up” the enzyme. This action stops the medication from being metabolized because those enzymes are no longer available.
Some medications susceptible to this are blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications, anxiety drugs, antihistamines, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. On the bright side, other medications can have an enhanced effect when combined with CBD. Anti-seizure medications may be more effective, for one. CBD may also contribute to pain relief, allowing for users to rely less on NSAIDs and opioids. Also, when CBD was combined with chemotherapy, cancer treatments were more effective. However, you should always address these issues with your vet before trying to treat your pet alone or combining medications with CBD.
