Going Through The Motions

Psalm 40 verse 6  says, “Sacrifice and offerings you did not desire…”

Let me ask, have you ever had to do something just because it was expected of you?

You know you didn’t want to do it, and therefore as you  were doing it, your heart  just wasn’t in it, and your attitude needed some “adjusting?”  Well that happens to me quite regularly.

Recently someone asked me to help them with a project. And I did it, but in all honesty I really wasn’t all that excited about it, and I bet my attitude showed that.   I was simply “going through the motions.”

Well today’s verse comes to us from the book of Psalms- and these are the words of King David.  He is talking about how the people of his day were required to give sacrifices and offerings to God.  But David was commenting on the fact that if our heart wasn’t in it, the people shouldn’t do it and God wouldn’t be pleased with sacrifices and offerings.

You see it is no different today.   God doesn’t want us “going through the motions” of living for Him.  He does not want us going to church, reading our Bible, or really doing anything just because it is “what we are supposed to do.”

Well how about you?

Are there things at work right now that you’re doing just because you have to?  Maybe you’re going though the motions.  Maybe you’re in a rut, and you are not giving your very best effort in your job?

You may not be able to control everything at work- but you can control your attitude.

So put your heart and enthusiasm into everything that your doing- give it your best effort.

When you do this you will be applying The Truth@Work.

Application Questions:

  • 1What does this message say to you?
  • 2Do you find yourself going through the motions at times and how do you fix this?
  • 3How do you adjust your attitude when you know it isn’t right?
