So there I was, stuck up to the fenders in mud; alone in the dark; mad at myself; frustrated, praying to God, ‘If You just get me out of this mess this one time, I promise…’
I’ve been in this place before, pleading to God to release me from the bondage of food, alcohol, dysfunctional relationships. Each time the steps that got me stuck were the same: lack of awareness, denial, making unhealthy choices, refusing to ask for help. Each time getting unstuck meant praying for forgiveness, swearing to myself and God, ‘It’ll never happen again,’ resolving to change my ways ‘next Monday.’ Usually I found myself stuck again on Tuesday.

I thought about this as sat in my truck stuck in the mud. Why do I keep getting stuck?
As we all know (and have experienced), God works in mysterious ways. He may not have parted the mud for me when I asked him to, but he did put me in a position (dark, quiet, stuck) where I could ponder my situation. Here’s what I came up with:
How to get unstuck and stay unstuck:
- Be mindful. Think about what you’re doing, where you’re going.
- When you find yourself starting to get stuck, get out quick.
- Don’t hang out with people, places or things that may get you stuck.
- When you get stuck, immediately get someone to help you get unstuck.
So, I called a tow truck company, got out of the mud, was home by midnight. Next time, I’ll be more mindful.
