6 Tips for Managing Stress at Work

One place where people feel a lot of stress is at work. Given the impact stress can have on productivity and your health, it’s easy to understand the importance of finding ways to manage work stress. Here are six tips to help you keep your cool in the workplace.

Organization Skills

A lot of stress comes from a lack of proper organization skills. If you don’t plan your day properly, you’ll lose time between projects or spend far too much time on low-priority tasks. And the more time you lose, the less you have for important jobs. Learn to prioritize and manage your time by tackling the most important tasks first. Creating a to-do list and sticking with it helps when getting organized.

Delegation

It’s imperative you learn when task delegation is a good idea. Knowing you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it. If your co-workers can handle a specific task, you’re better off delegating the job. This allows you to focus on other activities requiring more of your attention.

Perfectionism

There are occasions when you must compromise on your standards. How many times have you reworked a project, looking for perfection? Learn to tell which jobs to devote more time to and which jobs just need to get done.

Sleep

Your resistance to stress at work depends a lot on your physical health. You must give your body enough rest at night for it to recover properly. For some, six or seven hours are enough, while others only feel recharged after a full eight hours of sleep. Listen to your body and allow it the amount of rest it requires. You will be in better condition to manage stress at work.

Resolutions

You must learn to cope with workplace conflicts and the associated stress, which are inevitable. Even if you’re correct, you shouldn’t necessarily force your decision on your co-workers. It’s important to improve your communication skills to avoid hurting your colleagues, since this can disrupt the work environment and cause more stress.

Work-life Balance

It’s important to have a proper work-life balance. If you keep working, your family life suffers and you will eventually burn out. You must plan proper breaks and make sure you spend time with your family and friends. Social and recreational time help recharge your batteries and deal with work pressures better.

Regardless of your job, difficulties will occur. Stress is unavoidable, so you must learn better management techniques to help you stay productive and prevent stress-related health conditions.

I personally believe that an employee can reduce and manage his job-related stress, but he can never eliminate the source of stress. Well, everything depends on you. You can either make the stress an enduring unit of your profession like an office coffee machine or reduce the job to stress ratio by following different organizational stress management tactics. But if you want to grow professionally, then you must learn stress management tricks. I would like to tell that by reorganizing the scheme, taking a break, leaving the work on time more systematically, talking to the boss, avoiding the perfectionist urge, identifying the negative emotions, shifting the mindset, you can surely manage the additional stress at your craft.

I really like what you said about how sometimes you need to lower your standards just a little bit, and keep your perfectionism to yourself. I am the definition of a perfectionist, and it's really hard for me to let go of that. However, like you said, I think that would ease a ton of work for me, and make my days go by with much less stress.
