Do Real Men Use Essential Oils

I’ve heard plenty of men say “Essential oils are only for women.” There is such an aversion to the use of oils, by men, that the majority of them tend to dismiss essential oils as a possible health and wellness alternative. Getting a man to try an essential oil can be a downright Herculean task. This myth about oils being for women is just not true!

Do “Real Men” use essential oils?  History has a little something to say about that.  Essential oils were used by the officers of the Roman army. On the eve of a battle, the officers were massaged with a special blend of essential oils that included Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, Rosewood, and Frankincense.  The aroma of the oils would calm their nerves and help them to focus their thoughts as they prepared for their military campaigns.  You can’t get much manlier than that!

Let’s take a look at a few essential oils that can benefit men and highlight their health benefits. You might be surprised to find these powerful plant extractions can be essential for men’s health.

Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil

Copaiba promotes nourished and cleansed skin, so copaiba is a fantastic addition to homemade aftershave and other bath products for men.  Its woodsy and rustic scent makes it a great all natural cologne, as well.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood is a favorite classic of men’s blends and fragrances.  It has a distinct, sweet, woodsy, and long-lasting aroma that is uplifting and invigorating.  You’ll find Sandalwood is high in sesquiterpenes and has been researched for its powerful abilities to support a part of the brain known as the pineal gland. The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, which enhances deep sleep. Sandalwood also supports normal nervous and circulatory systems and is used for skin revitalization. Apply a drop or two near your cheek bones each night and breathe normally to promote relaxation. The aroma is also know to promote grounding and can help you open up sexuality. Because it helps maintain healthy circulation, it becomes a definite plus in the bedroom!

Vetiver Essential Oil

With a deep, earthy aroma, vetiver essential oil’s strength is a perfect ingredient in blends for men. Vetiver is uplifting and has been said to promote concentration and focus.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most commonly used oils in the world! Peppermint can be used to replace those additional cups of coffee used for a caffeine laden pick me up. Just add 2 drops of peppermint to 20 ounces of water and sip it throughout the day.  Your concentration is sure to improve and you might just enjoy a better night’s sleep!!

Lemon Essential Oil

Add a drop or two in your water at dinner to aid in digestion. Not only does it taste great, but it supports the normal function of the kidneys and helps to alkalize the body.

Ginger

Ginger is a great oil to support digestion. Use it when you are traveling to avoid the common digestive system issues that accompany those business trips.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang has a soft and sweet floral scent that is elevating and helps ignite a man’s sexuality.  It also enhances emotional connection in a relationship. It is known to soothe frazzled nerves to ramp up the romance factor!

Wintergreen, Clove & Peppermint Blend

Combine these oils to sooth muscles after an intense workout or a day of physically hard labor.

Frankincense, Geranium, Camphor, Blue Tansy & Black Spruce Blend

This blend works with both the physical and emotional aspects of the body to increase feelings of strength, courage, and clarity in the face of adversity or challenge.

Geranium, Fennel, Myrtle, & Peppermint Blend

This blend is key in offering support for healthy prostate and male urinary tract function. The prostate is a small gland that is part of the male reproductive system.  Prostate gland enlargement, which can cause bladder problems and discomfort, affects nearly 50 percent of men by age 60.

Rosemary, Sage, Fennel, Geranium, Yarrow & Frankincense Blend

This blend can help combat male hormone imbalance.  As men age, their DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone: a hormone produced by your body’s adrenal glands) and testosterone levels decline. Conversely, levels of DHT (dihydrotesteroone) increase, contributing to prostate enlargement and hair loss.

Goldenrod, Frankincense, Myrrh, Ginger, Nutmeg, Jasmine or Ylang Ylang

Any of these oils can be used to ward off impotence. Impotence may be caused by physical limitations due to an accident or injury or by psychological factors, such as trauma or stress. Male impotence is often linked to problems with the prostate (try the Geranium, Fennel, Myrtle, & Peppermint Blend). Modern research has shown that the aroma of some essential oils can stimulate the emotional center of the brain.

A great way to try out essential oils is by whipping up the following Shaving Cream or Fragrance Spray:

Homemade Shaving Cream

What You Will Need:

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the shea butter and coconut oil, stirring until just melted. Remove from the heat and add the olive oil and essential oils. Stir to mix.  Transfer to a bowl or jar and refrigerate until solid.  Remove from the refrigerator and let soften slightly. Add the 2 teaspoons of baking soda (baking soda helps remove oils which allows the razor to cut better and last longer and acts as a mild exfoliant). whip using a hand beater or a stand mixer until light and fluffy – about 2-3 minutes.  Spoon into a jar with a lid and keep in a cool, dry place
