Facts on Sleep That Everyone Should Know

When it comes to reading facts and stats on something, a thing as mundane as sleep doesn’t always come to mind. However, there are certain things about sleep that we don’t know, but might benefit from if we did. Well, below you can find a well-researched infographic with an array of stats and facts on sleep that a lot of us might not know about, which might surprise us.

Not everyone should sleep 8 hours a day

The idea that the appropriate amount of sleep a day is 8 hours is completely false. As it turns out, the younger you are, the more sleep you need. So young children need somewhere between 10 to 15 hours of sleep, while when it comes to adults, we need around 7 to 9 hours of sleep.

Snoring isn’t just a nuisance, but it’s also harmful

As it turns out, snoring is not just annoying for the one who has to endure the noise, but it’s also harmful to the person that snores. There is scientific research that connects snoring with certain medical issues like sleep apnea. This is also backed by statistics since about 50% of people who snore loudly have obstructive sleep apnea.

Most of the people sleep less than 8 hours a day

Actually, the statistics are much more worrying. Living in a day and age where everyone is focused on their work, people are getting less sleep than recommended. In certain countries such as the UK, Ireland, Canada, and the US, around 31-37% of people suffer from lack of sleep.

Exercising before going to sleep is a big no-no

Even though it’s a proven fact that exercising can be good for your physical and mental health, as well as for the quality of your sleep, you should never exercise right before going to sleep. Always make sure you work out at least 3 to 4 hours before going to bed, so that you can avoid tossing and turning.

These are just a few of the facts about sleep that most of us might have not known, but could definitely be of use. If these sparked your interest, then make sure you check out the infographic below, which contains all of these stats and facts and much, much more.
