Lycopene Found to Influence Sperm Morphology

Lycopene Found to Influence Sperm Morphology

When a couple is trying to get pregnant, everything can go under the microscope. One possible reason for issues with conceiving can be low sperm count, as well as low sperm motility. Basically; fewer sperm, or those that are present in semen cannot move as well as might be expected. Either issue can significantly impact chance of conception.

Resolving this problem could be as simple as adjusting your diet. Some foods, particularly those rich in lycopene, can play a major role. Lycopene is a nutritional substance that has high antioxidant properties. It’s also what creates the rich red hues in many fruits and vegetables, such as tomato or grapefruit.

Medical studies have shown that diets high in lycopene can boost sperm motility and sperm counts. Clinical trials and routine medical evaluations have borne out this fact repeatedly, across the world. One study showed a general boost of about half, compared to men whose diets did not regularly include high levels of lycopene.

Keeping lycopene in your diet is not difficult, and requires no trip to the doctor or pills to take. Look for foods that include fruits and vegetables containing it. Tomato sauces are an easy choice, so are most tropical fruits. The foods can be juiced if desired, or cooked into favorite dishes.

Key Points:

  • 1If you have a low sperm count, add nutritious rich foods like watermelon, papaya and tomatoes to your diet.
  • 2Studies show lycopene might be directly related to low sperm count.
  • 3 A study in India showed men who took 2000 micrograms of lycopene 2 times a day for 3 months showed sperm improvement.

A 2013 study in the journal Fertility and Sterility showed men who consumed a diet rich in lycopene had better quality sperm, particularly morphology.
