Infertility is a very real, very difficult challenge that countless couples face all over the world. What Difference Does PCOS Make?
Though improving their diet may seem like empty advice to women trying to have a baby, women that suffer through the challenges that PCOS presents must keep in mind the fact that their bodies do not react to food in a normal way. Caused by Insulin Resistance (IR), PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that prevents the release of normal reproductive hormones. Women with this condition have higher levels of androgens, which are “male” reproductive hormones, and oftentimes their bodies have difficulty ovulating. Without ovulation, there can be no conception and no baby.
Putting Two and Two Together
It makes sense, then, that a poor diet can reduce the odds of ovulation in a woman that has PCOS. By eating foods that exacerbate IR, women can actually worsen their condition and further limit their chances of ovulation. By the same token, ovulation can be encouraged by eating the right foods and playing down the extent to which IR occurs.
Additionally, an unhealthy diet can lead to weight gain, and women that are obese or overweight may have infertility issues.
What to Eat, Then?
Women that have PCOS and are hoping to improve their diet in an effort to increase their fertility should stay away from simple carbohydrates and sugars above all else. These two substances in foods release large amounts of glucose into the bloodstream, triggering the production of insulin and sparking Insulin Resistance. Furthermore, any processed foods or those with sugar additives should be avoided.
On the other hand, foods that are high in fiber and protein should be encouraged. Without going overboard, women that have PCOS should search out foods that contain complex carbohydrates and that provide a high level of fiber, such as fresh vegetables.
Eating a healthy, nutritious diet is a wonderful way to improve the chances of fertility in women that suffer from PCOS.
