PCOS and Nutrition: How Eating Right Can Make All the Difference!

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has many different symptoms–so many, in fact, that it can prove rather difficult to pin down and diagnose sometimes. For many women, it is a cause of infertility or of pregnancy complications; for some, it can cause skin problems, obesity, liver disease, emotional disorders, heart disease, and more. But if the symptoms are numerous, the root cause is fairly consistent. Generally speaking, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is caused by Insulin Resistance, or the body’s loss of the ability to properly utilize glucose.

This may sound severe–and to be sure, it’s something that ought to be taken seriously–but actually, in a way, it’s good news. The fact that the condition is caused by Insulin Resistance means that it can be reversed, and it can be reversed naturally. It’s largely a matter of correcting your diet and increasing your movement.

Of course, some Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) sufferers hear “correcting your diet” and assume that this involves something extreme–purchasing specialty foods, or completely forgoing carbohydrates. In reality, though, it just means eating healthy, and taking in the right kinds of carbs, balanced with the proper nutrients.

For example, you can make some slight alterations that will significantly reduce the sugars and “bad” carbs you take into your body. Instead of eating fruit that comes in heavy, sweetened syrup, you can buy fresh fruit, or look for canned fruit that doesn’t have any sweetening added. Instead of only eating starchy vegetables, you can eat some broccoli, spinach, and carrots. Instead of drinking sugary soda, you can switch to water–or at least a low-carb juice or diet soda.

Additionally, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) sufferers might consider switching from refined grains to whole grains. Think about brown rice instead of white, or using whole grain bread. Also, you can help reverse Insulin Resistance by switching from sugary cereals to cereals that are high in fiber; something like Kashi, perhaps.

There are other steps that can be taken, as well, of course. Insulite Health is a company that has done much in the way of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) research. They offer a supplement that has been shown to reverse the effects of this condition; plus, there are plentiful educational resources that will help you learn how to combat Insulin Resistance and ultimately start living a healthier, fitter lifestyle. Don’t think of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as a diagnosis, but rather think of it as an opportunity for improving the way you live!
