PCOS Weight Loss Secrets

The best and healthiest way to quickly lose weight with polycystic ovarian syndrome is by eating plenty of lean protein (chicken, egg whites, turkey, fish and tofu) and low Glycemic Index (GI) carbohydrates (fruits, veggies and whole grains). This is especially true for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and insulin resistance. Combining protein and carbohydrates helps your body to utilize insulin in order to shed body fat (as opposed to storing it), while decreasing cravings for unhealthy foods and naturally increasing energy levels.

The beauty of this strategy is that it is so easy to follow and doesn’t involve calorie counting, starvation or complex foods. You simply stick to white meats like fish, chicken and turkey, tofu and low GI whole grain carbs like brown rice and whole grain bread.

Sometimes with PCOS, you may worry about the weight coming back on.  Eating in this fashion also guarantees you will never be hungry, so you can keep off the weight for good.  Low blood sugar is what makes you hungry and irritable. By eating lots of low GI foods, this will keep your blood sugar levels stable and balanced.

You will have plenty of energy all day long and the hunger pangs will be kept at bay so that you don’t get tempted to binge on sweet and sugary foods.

In addition to eating lean protein and carbohydrates at each meal, here are several strategies that will help you naturally shed unwanted body fat:

  • Drink LOTS of water a day. This will keep you fully hydrated and flush out the toxins in your body. It also works to keep any hunger pangs at bay. Your body often thinks it’s hungry when it is actually thirsty!
  • Eat five small meals spaced out across the day so that you eat at least every three to four hours.
  • Eat slowly and take time to chew your food. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to realize it has had sufficient food; so eating more slowly gives your body time to recognize this. Chewing food well also aids digestion and that means your body gets all the nutrients of the healthy food you are eating.
  • Have your last main meal no later than two hours before bedtime. If you must eat something later, have a light snack only (think: an apple or some nuts).
  • Eat plenty of fiber in the form of fruit, vegetables and whole grains to keep your digestive system working efficiently. The better your digestion functions, the more water weight you will lose, less bloating you’ll experience, and the healthier you will feel.
  • Swap high GI foods such as white bread and white rice for wholegrain versions such as whole grain bread and brown rice. This will keep blood sugar levels steady so you don’t crave sweet or fatty foods.
  • Reduce the amount of salt you eat as it causes your body to retain water. Check food labels, particularly packaged meals. This includes frozen dinners, canned and boxed foods

These strategies are all very simple yet yield extremely powerful results when done in combination. If you find this list overwhelming, try doing one tip each week, until you’ve added them all into your lifestyle!
