More Sleep – More Good Hormones!

Today’s hectic lifestyle calls for less sleep and more productivity. The saying “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is common among college students trying to ace exams, young professionals attempting to maintain a work/life balance, and parents trying to keep up with their little ones. But for women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and are struggling with weight issues, a lack of sleep may be to blame! In fact, researchers have discovered that women who get less than adequate sleep often experience hormonal imbalances that can contribute to their weight gain or inability to shed extra pounds. Because Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is both associated with weight gain and is, in and of itself, the product of a hormonal imbalance, women who have this illness should pay close attention to their sleep patterns.

How Does Getting Too Little Sleep Affect Your PCOS?

The body produces three hormones that are largely responsible for your eating habits: leptin, cortisol, and ghrelin. Ghrelin is responsible for stimulating your appetite and telling your body that it is time to eat. Leptin, on the other hand, is the hormone that makes you feel full. Though it does not directly affect your appetite, cortisol is released under stressful situations and causes you to store fat around your abdomen, which can be very dangerous for women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

When you do not get adequate rest, your ghrelin levels are increased and your leptin levels are decreased–meaning that you can eat all day but you will still not feel full. This can naturally lead to weight gain, but the increased amount of cortisol in your system will also cause you to retain weight. All in all, it’s not a good scenario.

What Can You Do?

Basically, the best way to respond to this information is to get the sleep you need! This does not mean to sleep for twelve hours per night, but getting between seven and eight hours of sleep will greatly improve how you feel. Better yet, it will help you fight your Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) more effectively! When these three key hormones are balanced, it will be easier for you to keep to your diet and feel up to getting the exercise you need to combat your Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

And besides, who doesn’t want a legitimate reason to get a couple more hours of sleep each night?
