Particularly in medicine, there are many home remedies and other traditional treatments that are often recommended but lack science or data to support their use. The problem with proving out and gathering reliable data on these so-called home remedies and classic treatments is funding. Fortunately some companies are interested in funding proper research into them, and presenting their results to the medical community to consider.
Powdered ginger root was recently compared to sumatriptan, brand named as Imitrex, for treatment of migraine headaches. The study’s result was surprising; ginger was found to be effective. Most patients who received a dose of powdered ginger reported reduced pain, even the complete absence of migraine pain. Even when the study tested small doses of ginger the patients experienced significant pain relief that was tabulated in the results of the study.
The benefits of ginger as an effective treatment for migraine headaches are not just pain management, but reduced side-effects and lowered cost. Ginger, as a common over the counter substance, is substantially less expensive than so-called proper pharmaceutical drug treatments. This promises to lower costs to long-term migraine headache sufferers. Also, the worst of the side effects reported from those treated with powdered ginger were a few upset stomachs.
