How does mercury get there? It enters the water supply and is absorbed by bacteria which enter the food chain as they are eaten by fish. Mercury consumption is a possible risk and can interfere with the functioning of the brain. It may also produce loss or feeling or numbness in extremities like the arms and legs. This is especially a risk for children and pregnant women and other poisoning symptoms can include memory and vision loss and tremors.
