Going For A Mastopexy? Here Is How You Should Prepare

Mastopexy is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures that involve the removal of excess skin of the breast, and tightening and supporting the surrounding tissue. It is also known as breast lift surgery. Before you undergo any cosmetic procedure, it is vital that you prepare adequately: this will determine the success of the operation and aid in proper recovery.

Here are the ways you can prepare for your  breast lift surgery.

  1. Quit smoking

Most cosmetic surgeries call for a change in lifestyle. The same applies to mastopexy. One of the habits that you will be required to put on hold for some time is smoking. Smoking can sabotage your breast lift procedures. How does that happen? Note that smoking causes the blood vessels to shrink, resulting in less blood flow and less oxygen in the body. What follows after this is the death of tissues. It does not stop here. There are many problems that may result when nicotine is mixed with cosmetic surgery.

There are infections, the formation of lumps caused by fat necrosis, permanent damage to blood vessels, slow wound healing, and pronounced scars. Most plastic surgeons advise their patients to quit smoking three to six weeks before the procedure.

  1. Get a medical evaluation

It is vital to go for a medical assessment before doing plastic surgery. This is mainly because these procedures are not entirely safe. A breast lift procedure has its risks, and your doctor should handle it delicately. That is why the surgeon should have a clue about your health status to determine whether or not you qualify for the procedure. Your blood pressure and other systems are checked to prepare the surgeon on how to handle your procedure. A medical exam before your surgery could save your life.

It is also crucial, to be honest with your doctor. Questions about your age, medical history, among other things, should be answered truthfully.

  1. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs

Taking anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, and some herbal supplements are not safe for mastopexy. Such medications can cause excessive bleeding during surgery. It is important to tell your doctor if you are on any medication. You will be advised whether to stop taking it and when to stop taking the medication before the surgery. If there are replacements for the medicines, then your doctor will be in a position to advise you on what to do.

  1. Take a preoperative mammogram

A mammogram is necessary before any cosmetic surgery procedure on your breasts. This is done to identify or detect any existing issues with the breasts so that they are addressed before the surgery. Note that a professional breast lift surgeon will only operate you if your breasts are clear of all complications.

Also, this procedure is vital as it will give you a documented baseline mammogram, which will come in handy when you go for mammograms in the future after the cosmetic procedure. This will help ensure that the surgery does not diminish the chance to detect abnormalities in your breasts in the future and cure conditions such as breast cancer.

  1. Do not eat after midnight before surgery

The procedure can be excruciating, and you will have to be put on anesthesia during the procedure. However, some things may diminish the power of the anesthesia that you will be used. One of them is taking food and fluids a few hours to the surgery. Avoid taking food after midnight before the day of the operation to allow the anesthesia that will be used to have its full effect.

  1. Get comfortable clothes

You might have to leave the fitting clothes at home as you go for this surgery. Loose and cozy pajamas are recommended. Button up front shirts, and post-surgical bras should be on standby. The surgery can be painful and uncomfortable. Getting clothes that can be easily removed and worn will make the experience better.

Clothes with complicated closures will be stressful: the easier and quicker to wear and remove them, the better for you. Also, you want your breasts to be free. Tight clothes will cause pain and can also affect the wound healing process.

Before going for the surgery, shower well, and get enough rest. Also, you should call a friend or family to come to the clinic to take you home after the procedure. You do not need to be alone after a mastopexy, as you will need help doing a few things as you heal. During the healing process, you should also keep your surgeon aware of any concerns you may have regarding bruising, swelling, and other issues so that they may be addressed. Talk to your doctor regarding post-surgery issues that you are likely to experience and what to do about them.
