Learning Points: How Adults Are Financing Mental Health Care

It’s not often we end up in a situation that challenges us so thoroughly — or for so long. 2020 was hard for us all and some more than others, forcing adults worldwide to adjust to stressors they had never experienced before to such a great degree.

And some, understandably, have struggled more. This is perfectly normal and perfectly understandable, highlighting for many adults a need to consider how they live their days and weeks and how they finance the maintenance of their healthcare — particularly as relates to mental health and wellbeing.

Addressing Stress

One’s environment drastically affects their wellbeing — and that their wellbeing affects their productivity and inclination to save money or to spend it poorly.

When 2020 was still in its infancy, there was a common sentiment to make the best of lockdown. To become focused and to address creative projects and pursuits that daily life left unfulfilled. It was an admirable idea, but it involved a level of optimism that proved different from reality.

Due to the unique stressors we’ve all experienced during the pandemic, stress has taken center stage as a priority to be treated and resolved as much as possible.

Lockdown and Remote Healthcare

For many, enforced social isolation has shone new light on just how important and precious human connection is. Even for those who struggle with issues relating to social anxiety, the undeniable value of intimacy, friendship and contact has proven invaluable in completing an adult’s life. While a person may choose the manner in which they pursue those connections, their importance remains a part of the picture for living a life with wellbeing and meaning.

With lockdown leading so many adults to live socially isolated, it’s produced a change in how mental health services are accessed. Many are turning to online therapy to help deal with their new situation; a great option that nevertheless is not provided to most via the NHS. This has led to adults needing to finance private therapy, which while cheaper remotely than in person still costs a significant amount of money.

Financing Support

With funds so uncertain for many during the pandemic, some adults are turning to savings and government support packages to help meet their new costs of living healthily. Although many households have seen their incomes lowered in the previous year, many have also accrued savings in expectation of financial difficulties. This has helped adults to meet their costs in the short-term, with hopes pinned on a better future with more stable income.

Other adults are turning to their preferred long-term loan lender to obtain additional funding that meets their new costs. Although some lenders have restricted availability for new customers, many are still available with the understanding that more adults than ever before are in need of additional finances. A benefit to those in this situation is the ability to tailor the repayment dates of their loans in a manner that suits their expectations for the months and years ahead where their income is concerned. Done responsibly and as part of a larger plan, loans in this manner have helped adults to obtain the professional support they need to keep their mental health as positive as it can be during a difficult time in history.
