What is PCOS?

Welcome to the PCOS Health Channel. I’m Robin Nielsen, and I look forward to helping you navigate through the sometimes confusing information around symptoms of hormone imbalance. First, let me tell you a little bit about what PCOS is and then I’ll show you next steps for feeling better!

PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome It used to be called Stein-Leventhal Syndrome and now they’re thinking of renaming it again; because it’s a complicated and confusing syndrome and very hard for the medical community to diagnose.

It’s a hormonal endocrine disorder or syndrome and you may experience just one — or all of these symptoms: depression or low moods, irregular, infrequent or completely absent periods, excessive facial or body hair where you don’t want it, hair loss where you want hair, unexpected weight gain, acne, skin tags (raisin-like growths on the skin), brown skin patches, chronically low energy, exhaustion or lack of mental alertness (brain fog for example), infertility, anxiety, or decreased sex drive. If you have an ultrasound, there may be cysts on your ovaries, but maybe not. The symptoms are often different for every woman. That’s why it’s so hard to diagnose and why it’s so important for you to be in charge of your health.

So what causes symptoms of PCOS? It’s considered a hormonal imbalance linked to the way our bodies process insulin to regulate blood sugar from the foods we eat (especially carbs and sugars). This causes inflammation and can then lead to insulin resistance, a major underlying cause of the symptoms of PCOS. And this is a problem because insulin is the KEY that unlocks our cells to let sugar in so we can burn it for fuel. If our cells are RESISTANT to insulin, that means that we can’t get sugar into our cells. So we become tired and fatter with lower moods and imbalanced hormones. You can also be thin with insulin resistance and symptoms of PCOS.

Determining if you have PCOS can be a sometimes confusing and difficult process. The reason is that PCOS is a syndrome — each woman has a different set of symptoms. And the bottom line is we don’t need a diagnosis to take action to feel better. The PCOS test here will help you to discover YOUR symptoms of hormone imbalance so you know where to begin. And this is powerful information because when you take action that’s in the benefit of your own healing…you alter the way your genes express themselves. You will literally begin to feel different…for the better. …So click on the blue bar below to take the PCOS test. Whether you have 1 symptom or many symptoms, it’s time to take action. I’ll meet up with you after you take the test. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
