Combating Skin Issues With Ease

There are many skin problems that we deal with from birth until death. Many of us had newborns that had issues with milia, eczema, drool rashes; by the time our children are ten months old, we’ve become pseudo-dermatologists with our ability to diagnose skin issues like rashes based on-site alone. Another example of how motherhood makes you an expert on so many different topics. But what about the skin ailments that we encounter during pregnancy and beyond? Many women, for example, are more prone to developing melasma during pregnancy and go through a lot to prevent it and cure it once it happens.

Prevention Is Critical

You’ve heard the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So, knowing that, we should aim to prevent as many skin issues as possible. One easy area to do this is through SPF. We don’t hesitate to slather our young children in sunscreen before heading to the pool or on a beach trip, but we may not take the same care of ourselves in the chaos of the day. Not applying SPF can cause premature aging of the skin and painful sunburns, but it can also cause more severe issues. If you don’t prevent sun damage, you may need AK dermatology to help with your Actinic Keratosis. It’s important to seek this type of treatment as prevention because untreated AK can lead to skin cancer.

Another area you can prevent skin issues is making sure you’re washing your delicate facial skin with a different type of cleaner than what you’re using on your body. You should pay attention to any reactions you may have to specific formulations, and the fewer ingredients in your skincare, typically the better you can tolerate it.

Addressing Issues Quickly

Most skin issues can be resolved with a quick trip to a dermatologist, and prescriptions might be prescribed to help you with any problems you’re having. If you have teenage children, it’s best to book an appointment with a dermatologist at the first sign of acne to get ahead of the issue. Your pocketbook will thank you for it too! You can spend a small fortune on OTC products that may or may not work for your child versus a small co-pay to a dermatologist and whatever prescription they may need. The same goes for any baby skin issues your newborn or young toddler may have. Most pediatricians can address any skin issues quickly, and if it’s something they can’t identify or treat (which is very rare), they can refer you to a pediatric dermatologist.

Sticking With Your Regimens

Whatever you decide with your dermatologist (or your own trial and error) works for you, it’s essential to stick with it. Practice makes perfect, as they say, and continuing your daily skincare practices will keep issues at bay and eventually resolve them. Remember, with skin, and it takes time; there is rarely an overnight “fix” to anything you or your child is dealing with. But, if you have the commitment to see the product usage through, you will see results. And, as always, if you need an actual procedure through a doctor or dermatologist, make sure you keep your follow-up appointments and use any post-treatment creams and salves they may give you.

Start From Within

Remember, just like the food we eat and nourish our bodies, it affects our physical and mental health and our skin’s health. An easy way to prevent or combat any skin concerns you have is to make sure you and your entire family are eating as nutritious as possible. Think of eating foods in their whole form, avoiding added sugars and over processed foods. Diets high in fat are not great for skin health at all. You can also add supplements to your healthy lifestyle to promote skin health, like rose hips tea or taking a biotin supplement. Biotin helps with nail and hair health as well, so that’s a beautiful bonus!

Wherever you or your children are on your skin issue journey, remember that there are few skin concerns that a dermatologist can’t help you treat. The important thing is to address issues as soon as you see them arising, so they don’t become uncomfortable or cause you or your loved one any insecurities. Here’s to your health and loving the skin you’re in!
