Drinking 2 or more Diet Beverages a Day Linked to High Risk of Stroke, Heart Attack

I need to complain for a minute.  Full sugar soda is NOT GOOD for me, now diet soda is NOT GOOD for me!  Yikes, what are we supposed to do?

Previously we have been warned that diet soda is linked to:

  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Type 11 diabetes
  • Obesity

A new study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association has now statistically shown that for women over 50 who drink diet soda the risks for stroke and heart disease increase.  The more frequent you drink the greater the risk.  They compared stroke and heart disease incidents between frequent diet soda drinkers and those who consumed less than one diet soda per week.

Woman over 50 who drank 2 or more diet sodas per day doubled their risk of stroke.

At this time no specific ingredient has been targeted as the cause of this risk increase.

Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani said those beverages “may not be harmless and high consumption is associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart disease.”
