Difference Between Sunscreens, Lotions or Sprays

There are so many choices at the drugstore for sunblock. Creams, lotions, mousses, moisturizers and sprays. What are the best? SPF is always a given and you generally need 55 or higher. If you exercise outdoors and spend time in the water your need a sunblock that is waterproof. Use a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum so you are protected against UVA and UVB. But what is better a lotion or a spray?

Sunscreens are made with17 active ingredients that include absorbers to create a chemical reaction to absorb UVR and reflectors or physical barriers that reflect or block UV rays. Most sunscreens have absorbers and or reflectors.

Use on a daily basis to minimize the harmful effect of UBV an UVA rays. Sunscreens shield your collagen, elastin and keratin which keeps the skin smooth and firm. You can use daily moisturizers and sunscreens that include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to stop and reverse some signs of aging.

Spray-Ons

Spray on sunscreens are easy to apply and you may be more likely to use them. They are light weight and dry quickly and feel less greasy on your skin. Spray-ons seem less messy and it is easier to get to hard to reach spots on your body.

Use the convenience of spray on sunscreens if you are an outdoor enthusiast who needs to reapply every two hours. If you don’t like the feel of lotion your hands, use spray-on.

Some people find spray-ons are difficult to know where you are protected. There are spray formulas containing alcohol that might affect your skin or not give enough protection. You might need to experiment with different brands to ensure your skin does not feel sticky.

Lotions

Sunscreen lotions are effective in preventing skin cancers from squamous cell skin cancers to its precursors to melanomas which are the most deadly forms of skin cancer. If you don’t use lotions your skin will have no sun protection and you can be exposed to ultraviolet radiations. No matter if you use sun or tanning beds you are inviting skin damage, cancer and immune problems plus cataracts by avoiding the use of sunscreens.

Lotions can provide a deeper coverage since you have to actually rub it in. Lotions have a moisturizing effect and are creamier. Many women prefer lotions since they are used to using make up that feels the same on skin. No matter what type of sunscreen you choose, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that you rub it on at least 15-30 minutes before going outside. This gives the sunscreen time to soak into your skin. Find the product you like best and use it.

There are no major benefits of using a spray over a lotion. It is important to use the sunscreen no matter what type you choose. Use it properly. If you prefer lubing or spraying apply fifteen to thirty minutes before heading outside. Cover every tiny bit of exposed skin with the proper amount of sunscreen. Reapply every two to three hours and more if you are sweating or swimming.

To find the best sunscreen medium, ask these questions:

  1. Are your sporty? Use a gel.
  2. Do you break out? Use an oil free sunscreen. If you have dry skin use a creamy sunscreen.
  3. Do you have sensitive skin? Stay away from chemical blockers and use mineral blockers instead.
  4. What is best for kids? The stick kind is usually best since the formulation is waxy and won’t drip into eyes.
  5. Are you bald? Just use any type you want and slather it all over your head. Or maybe wear a hat?
  6. Are you a hairy person? Use sprays and gels they don’t tend to cling to hairs like lotions.
