Health Tip: When to Worry About Neck Pain

We can suffer from neck pain that is not very severe and lasts only a short time, but what are the symptoms of neck pain serious enough to see a doctor? Minor neck pain may not call for a doctor’s opinion, but there are two cases when you should go to a doctor. You should see a doctor when you know it is caused by an injury. However, there is a more insidious cause of the pain that demands a doctor’s attention as well. When a slow degeneration of intervertebral cartilage discs at the joint surfaces occurs, you will have painful bone grinding on bone during movement.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests that the following symptoms require a visit to the doctor:
1) When symptoms that are not associated with an injurious event occur with pain that is long-lasting or is accompanied by stiffness.
2) When it is a severe pain, a lot worse than what you might feel when fatigued. Such fatigue may come from muscle pain more than joint pain.
3) When there is a radiation of pain from the point of origin into the arms or legs.
4) When you have the pain along with headaches, tingling, numbness or weakness.

Key Points:

  • 1Neck pain has a number of causes. The concern is in disk degeneration.
  • 2You should seek treatment if the pain is persistent or becomes severe.
  • 3If you have numbness or tingling seek immediate medical attention.

Neck pain may be caused by an injury or the slow degeneration of discs between the vertebrae.
