Poor Sleep Habits = Poor Grades

The erratic life a college student: differing class schedules, a need to socialize, and coordinating various study sessions all can lead to sleep deprivation.   A study of college students found those with a regular sleep schedule have greater school success.

61 full-time Harvard undergraduates kept sleep diaries for 30 days.   This study showed that those with more consistent sleep times (waking up and going to bed and the same time) is as important as the number of hours slept.

Irregular sleep patterns were associated with lower grade point averages.

Irregular sleep patterns tend to mess with melatonin release and your natural body clock.

Researchers concluded that light-based interventions, increase in natural daylight, and less exposure to electronic devise close to bedtime could be helpful.

Key Points:

  • 1Melatonin is a hormone released by the body to promote sleep.
  • 2Most college students sleep the same number of hours, just some are on a regular bedtime routine.
  • 3Performance can be impaired when your body clock is not in sync with actual time.

“We found that the body clock was shifted nearly three hours later in students with irregular schedules, as compared to those who slept at more consistent times each night,” study senior author Dr. Charles Czeisler said.
