If You Didn’t Get a lot of Sun Last Summer, Don’t Forget Your Vitamin D this Winter

Many people are deficient in Vitamin D, and as winter approaches and the sunshine disappears, you should check your levels with a doctor. While light skinned people need 10-20 mins of sunlight per day, dark skinned people will need more. If you did not get this exposure of sun during the summer months, you may need to supplement with Vitamin D3, which doctors recommend over other supplements. If you did get a good deal of sun exposure this summer, than your Vitamin D levels may be in the acceptable range, but only a doctor can tell for sure. Vitamin D is essential to help heal your injuries, support healthy cells, and reduce inflammation which is critical to those with acne. While little research is available regarding a link between Vitamin D and acne, getting your levels checked to ensure you are healthy is a step in the right direction.

Key Points:

  • 1Vitamin D helps in wound healing, cell differentiation, and in moderating inflammation, 3 things that are important to acne sufferers.
  • 2While there is little published research attempting to link vitamin D levels to acne, it can’t hurt to make sure your levels are in the acceptable range.
  • 3When taking vitamin D, look for D3, which almost all leading authorities recommend over D2, and as always, if you have specific medical issues, be sure to talk to your doctor before supplementing.

…if you are light skinned and didn’t end up getting 10-20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure per day during the summer or if you are darker skinned and didn’t get a bare minimum of 20-60 minutes of unprotected sun exposure per day, you may need to supplement with a vitamin D pill this winter.
