Exercise is Medicine

We all know exercise is good for us, but next time you go to the doctor he may write you a prescription for exercise.

Study after study has shown that 30 minutes of physical activity a day can help prevent and treat numerous chronic conditions from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and others.

The American College of Sports Medicine (www.acsm.org) along with the American Medical Association (www.ama-assn.org) launched a joint initiative Exercise is Medicine.  This program is designed to encourage America’s patients to incorporate physical activity and exercise into their daily routine and to encourage doctors to prescribe exercise to their patients.  The ACSM and the AMA want to work with physicians to record physical activity as a vital sign during patient visits.  The goal is to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of disease prevention and treatment.  Your doctor visits are going to change if this program continues with the enthusiasm it was launched with.

Basic exercise recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association are:

Moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day five days a week
or
Vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day three days a week
AND
8 to 10 strength-training exercise, 8 to 12 reps of each exercise twice a week.
