Nope, it is perfect, take away your chest measurement, now the ratio between you waist and hips is high, that makes that 2/3rds of your body look more like a pear, if your waist was 33 or more and your hips stayed at 36 then you would look more like an apple. It is not about your appearance, it is about your risk of heart attack and that is lower in pears than apples...

I am being told I have a pear shape d body. I absolutely do NOT have that. My measurements are 38 26 36 So something is amiss.

My lab results are the best way to tell how wrong this is. I do carry my fat around my belly but I am not overweight nor at risk of any coronary disease. This study is misleading and inaccurate and the person replying to some of the comments is not very professional.

The ratio calculation obviously can’t see the body being measured. So use your own knowledge of yourself and your common sense. If you have a 6-pack you obviously don’t have a lot of body fat or you wouldn’t be able to see the definition between the muscle layers. Thus the test will not need to be applied to you. However some people think that because they do not look outwardly fat, they are fine. This test can help point to whether they have internal fat (visceral fat) storing up around their organs. This fat can push their organs down giving a larger waist than they would normally have.

Won't someone extremely skinny have a ratio close to 1:1, especially if they have muscular abdominals? I wouldn't describe anyone with a 6 pack as apple shaped.

A ratio is the expression of the measure of your waist to your hips. Unless the measures were entered wrong, the ratio is correct. If you don't like being the apple or pear that is described in the result, sorry, that is how the ratio is labeled to determine your health risk of your shape. That is what this calculator determines, extra risk or not depending on the shape of your body.

These sites are all wrong. I have a very large frame. My weight is 195 lbs. I am 5’7” and I am only overweight by 15 lbs with my bone density being above average than most. I look healthy in the mirror, and don’t have a lot of body fat at the midsection. I do cardio 4x week, and push heavy weights, and into bodybuilding. So yeah don’t believe everything you read.

I just ran my numbers through this calculator and got a correct result so I am not sure what happened. Unfortunately, I too store fat around my middle and not my hips. This shape puts you at increased risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Frequently referred to as apple shape, you tend to keep fat at your midsection and less on your hips. Our bodies convert this upper body fat to energy whenever your body runs short. This raises cholesterol and blood pressure.

What does it mean if you have a lot of waist fat and not a lot of hip fat, but the thing said that you were the opposite?

Measure around your waist at the umbilicus, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor.

For the purpose of measurement does the waist begin where the ribcage ends because that is my narrowest point of measurement whereas my umbilicus is the widest and just below there the next widest. Which one should I use.
