Combatting Diet Culture on Social Media

This was a very thought provoking article that touches the surface of a much-needed discussion about how we use social media. The post goes on to discuss how social media plays a role in how we view our self in this society. When you are bombarded with ads and idols of perfection, it tends to make you feel that you are not worthy to be all that you were created to be and more. Many of us cannot look like Kim Kardashian or Channing Tatum every day because we have so much to do in so little time. So, we look at their lives and compare to our own and say to ourselves, “I hate how I look”. So how do we fix it? We say, well, what if I starve myself or what is I arch my back a little more or suck in my gut to give the illusion that I got it all together and really, you’re no better than the folks that put on all these cosmetics to have you believe that this is how you are supposed to look. Truth of the matter is that it’s all a lie. One big fat lie. Believe in yourself. Take a look at the rose, it has its thorns but you don’t see it trying to become a dandelion or sunflower? No, it stands bold in what it was created to be, a beautiful, red, white or pink rose.

Key Points:

  • 1Selfies posted on social media may be a cry for approval that may backfire into a storm of criticism.
  • 227% of people in this study reported feeling stressed about how they personally look in photos.
  • 3Social media users have a strong association with poor body image.
  • 4Spending too much time on the internet can make you have false sense of reality. Get off your phone and into your life.

Another study found that women college students who engaged in these behaviors on Facebook were more likely to connect their self-worth to their appearance.
