Many Moisturizers Aren’t What They Claim to Be

Buyers beware when it comes to moisturizers.   You may think you are buying hypoallergenic only to find that your skin still breaks out.   A recent study by Northwestern University found that 83% of hypoallergenic products had an allergenic chemical in them.   They also found that 43% of the moisturizers labeled “fragrance-free” contained botanicals that can cause a skin rash.   And “dermatologist recommended” could mean they found three people who would endorse the product.

Moisturizers are beneficial:

Help skin retain moisture.
Reduce inflammation.
Help prevent infection.

Best choices for allergen free: white petroleum jelly, Vaseline original petroleum jelly, cold-pressed coconut oils, Vanicream’s hypoallergenic products, Ivory raw unrefined shea butter, Smellgood African shea butter and Aveeno Eczema Therapy.

Read the listed ingredients carefully.   You also may have to do some testing to find a product that works for you.

Key Points:

  • 1Products that have the label “dermatologist recommended” can be up to 20% more in price per ounce.
  • 2If the product is dermatologist recommended that could mean anywhere from 3 to 1000 scientists.
  • 3Surprisingly enough, not many dermatologists are aware of the ingredients that are in these products.

The researchers also discovered that 45 percent of products marketed as fragrance-free contained a botanical ingredient or one that reacts to a fragrance that can cause a skin rash or skin allergy.
