Fatigue (Symptoms, Causes, Treatment)

Chronic fatigue is more than just occasionally being tired.   It is when you are SO tired that you can no longer perform everyday functions.

The nature of this illness makes it hard to be diagnosed.   Fatigue can be masked by many other common illnesses.   For example, a cold or an allergy can cause fatigue.   Eliminating all the other possible aliments (anemia, diabetes, sleep disorder, depression or heart disease) associated with fatigue are usually ruled out before a Chronic Fatigue diagnosis is reached.

Because fatigue can be gradual many may not notice the signs until a real problem has set in.   Many of us as we age write off our fatigue symptoms as natural aging.   Some signs to watch for are: impaired memory or concentration, unrefreshing sleep, muscle and or joint pain, tender lymph nodes, or headache.   4 or more of these symptoms lasting longer than 6 months and you need to see a health professional.

Key Points:

  • 1Fatigue is not drowsiness but is often a symptom of an underlying medical condition.
  • 2The causes of fatigue can be diagnosed with an in depth medical history. Causes include diabetes, heart disease, and hypothyroidism.
  • 3Treatments for fatigue depend upon the underlying psychological or physical cause. Therefore the earliest diagnosis of the underlying cause rather than seeking the prevention of fatigue is paramount.

Also, fatigue can be a normal response to physical and mental activity; in most normal individuals it is quickly relieved (usually in hours to about a day, depending on the intensity of the activity) by reducing the activity.
