How You Can Rewire Your Brain

There is new research that indicates that it is possible for humans to retrain our brain. Our brain consists of neurons and synapses. Neurons process and transmit information in our brains. Synapses are the gaps between the neurons that allow information to pass from one neuron to the next. When we are infants, we have the fewest number of synapses, which means that is when our brains have the greatest capacity for growth. As we age the synapses increase and if we rarely use the synapses, they get eliminated. It was previously thought that neurons can’t reproduce after the first few years of life, but new research indicates that it can. There is also hope that scientists will discover a way to repair the areas of the brain that have been damaged. The neural pathways of the brain connect and every time we think the new thoughts make a new pathway. When we repeat and practice these thoughts we strengthen these pathways. However, when old pathways don’t get used they weaken over time. But with direct attention towards a change, we have the ability to rewire our brains. We must set goals, recognize the triggers, make conscious decisions, and seek rewards from healthy pursuits. If we do this, a new pathway is strengthened and a healthy habit is formed.

Key Points:

  • 1The brain is able to change and create new neural connection throughout life into late age and we can train our brain by rewarding ourselves for positive activities and practicing positive behaviors
  • 2New thoughts create new pathways in the brain, repetition strengthens these pathways, and old pathways that get used less are weakened
  • 3Emotional, social, and environmental triggers can cause a downward spiral into bad habits, but practicing healthy skills such as meditation and mindfulness can prevent this downward spiral
