Bilberry Extract for Insulin Resistance

Bilberry extract is one of the amazing ingredients in RejuvaPlus. Though the name and characteristics of the bilberry plant may seem similar to those of a blueberry they are only cousins!

Bilberry plants originated in Northern Europe. They are smaller in size and darker, almost black, in color compared to blueberries. The blueberries we commonly see in our supermarket usually have pale flesh, while bilberries have a much darker inside.

While both berries, and most berries in general, offer many health benefits, we included Bilberry extract in our RejuvaPlus for its amazing ability to help regulate blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity.

Based on a study done in 2010 for The Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that bilberry extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels and increased insulin sensitivity. The study found that bilberry extract has a similar reaction in the body as Metformin, an anti-diabetic drug. This study provides information that bilberry extract can have a beneficial effect on women with PCOS.

There are other amazing benefits of bilberry extract. Bilberry is rich in antioxidants, anthocyanins and polyphenols. They are also believed to help lower inflammation and protect against oxidative damage from diseases such as Inflammatory bowel disease and cardiovascular disease.

While bilberries may not be readily available in many of our supermarkets, adding an array of berries to our diet can be extremely beneficial. Berries are an excellent source of carbohydrates and fiber for women with PCOS.

Adding berries to salads is my favorite way to enjoy them beyond just the morning breakfast shake.

They can be easily packed along with hard boiled eggs and chopped veggies for a simple on-the-go lunch. Buying berries frozen allows you to have perfectly ripened berries year round.

Try out this recipe that uses one dish and frozen blueberries! It can’t get any easier than that!

Though Bilberries may not be easily accessible in the United States, we are lucky enough to have the natural benefits from these amazing plants right inside our RejuvaPlus. Cheers to you beautiful women and these beautiful berries!
