In the last 25 years significant progress has been made to reduce the number of maternal and childhood deaths. 95 % of these deaths occur in low to middle income counties which creates some challenges. A four pronged approach which includes improving pregnancy and delivery care, treating severe infectious diseases, eliminating malnutrition, and providing contraception should reduce the number of deaths even more. The authors estimate that satisfying 90% of the global unmet need for contraception in the Reproductive Health package could avert 28 million births each year and consequently prevent around 67000 maternal deaths from childbirth.
