The knowledge of Ayurveda has been around for ages. But its effectiveness in weight loss has become popular recently. Free medical websites are now filled with a plethora of information on Ayurvedic diet and offer detailed insight to ways one can incorporate it in their daily eating habits.
An Ayurvedic diet is a complete plan that guides you about what to eat, when to eat, and how to boost your health with healthy eating. Even though you call it “a diet”, the Ayurvedic diet does not push you to eat too little to lose weight. On the contrary, it helps you correct your eating habits. It helps in managing weight loss, diseases, and longevity. This plan involves the consumption of whole foods and asks you to stay away from processed foods. Here is a stepwise guide to adopting an Ayurvedic diet for weight loss.
Find Your Prominent Energy
In order to see effective results while practicing an Ayurvedic diet, you need to find your constitutional type or “dosha”. If you eat according to your prominent energy, your body will fall into a perfect sink with whatever you intake.
There are three different Ayurvedic doshas:
- Vata (Space & Air): People with this energy type are creative, intense, and expressive. Their common attributes are that of the environment they are in.
- Pitta (Fire & Water): Pittas are known to be self-driven, joyful, and intelligent. Their attributes are flexibility, temper, and mobility.
- Kapha (Earth & Water): The Kaphas are mostly lethargic, loving, and peaceful. They carry the attributes of Earth & water. These people are known to be heavy, immobile, and soft.
Select Food According to Your Dosha
Once you know your exact type, you can create a plan by picking up foods that will nourish your body and help you balance your energy. Each dosha type has its own food that helps with the process.

The food type for Pittas is based around eating raw bitter and sweet vegetables. Their diet can also include cereals, egg whites, chicken white meat, and dry white wine. When it comes to the foods that are to be avoided, the Pittas must refrain from eating apricots, salted butter, dark chicken, and chili pepper.

Their food selection can make them become active and full of life. The Kaphas must avoid sweet or sour fruits. In addition, kidney beans, duck, fish, and pasta must also be excluded from the menu.
