Aela began her motherhood journey as a healthy 34 year old woman by getting standard genetic tests and STD screening. She became pregnant on her 2nd IVF cycle, but the pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. At 35, considered an advanced maternal age, she became pregnant again but suffered another miscarriage. Being an otherwise healthy woman with a strong egg reserve and no indication of genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in the miscarriages, Aela was prescribed seven tests by her fertility doctor to get to the root of the issue.
The first test was an Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome (APS) test. APS is a disorder of the autoimmune system and can result in increased blood clotting, preventing healthy placentas from forming.
The next test focused on the production of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), as maintaining proper levels of TSH is very important during pregnancy.
Production of thyroxine by the thyroid were tested next, as insufficient levels impair fetal development.
Production of thyroid peroxidase – more thyroid testing.
Glucose was tested next, as a lot of women who have had multiple miscarriages have been shown to have high fasting glucose levels.
The sixth test ordered was to check for Celiac disease, which can be asymptomatic.
Finally, levels of vitamin D were tested. Low vitamin D levels are linked to a multitude of issues with pregnancy.
Aela is hoping that the tests either come back clear or with an issue that can be easily remedied.
Be sure to follow these steps if you have had a miscarriage before. #HealthStatus
