Why Do I Get A Headache When I Haven’t Had My Coffee?

Caffeine like many other things is addictive and is considered to be a drug at the end of the day. Many Americans and those around the world are well aware that their morning goes much smoother with a cup or two of coffee to get things moving. Headaches happen to those who lack their morning cup of coffee because they are going through caffeine withdraws. Caffeine is a stimulant that allows our brain to essentially jump start itself so we can begin our day.

These headaches occur when the brain does not receive enough caffeine and pressure is applied to the head in a tension type way, almost as if you had a big rubber band wrapped tightly around your head. For some these headaches will go away throughout the day, but for others these small headaches may turn into a full blown migraine headache.

Like other addictive drugs, if we slow down our supply we become irritable or tired, but if you cut if off entirely withdrawal will begin and your day will become quite unpleasant. While not as extreme as other addictive drugs that can cause withdrawal a headache that can turn into a migraine can be more than enough for some to avoid missing that morning cup of coffee.

Key Points:

  • 1Caffeine is drug, stimulant, and when we haven’t had our usual dose we feel down.
  • 2Caffeine is addictive and your body responds by triggering headaches and making you feel tired.
  • 3Three days of drinking coffee can lead to a downside when you no longer have caffeine.

The other problem is that caffeine is addictive. When we aren’t getting what we’re used to, we can feel tired, inattentive, irritable and moody. This is known as withdrawal. Many people regularly drink caffeinated beverages just to avoid feeling this way.
