Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder, or CMT, is an extremely rare hereditary disease. It’s characterized by degenerative deterioration of the patient’s peripheral nervous system. As the disease progresses, they lose tissue in their muscles, and sensation to touch across their entire body. As the disease begins to reach more advanced stages, the patient can lose the ability to do even simple things like walk upright without aid, handle fine motor manipulation such as that required to operate light switches or buttons on clothing. The disease also brings pain along with the rest of the debilitating physical effects, and many patients find it difficult to sleep through the night without being jolted awake by intense spasms.
Some CMT patients have found marijuana can provide relief, where modern pharmaceuticals can’t. Or better than they can in some cases. Yet in states across America where cannabis has not yet been legalized, this leaves patients in a quandary. Suffer in pain and inability to function on a basic level but obey the law, or break it and take some semblance of quality of life back in hand.
Both THC and CBD, which is a non-psychoactive component in the cannabis plant, offer some relief to CMT patients. And, as some states legalize cannabis, it’s opening fresh new avenues for a formerly dim life for these patients.
