Every year approximately 1500 infants die as a result of SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Sleep related issues can also occur when a baby injures themselves in their crib. Approximately 26 babies are injured every day from crib related accidents such as falling or climbing over the side of the crib. There are several recommended solutions for parents or caregivers to help ensure the safety of their babies:
1. Have the child sleep on their back. Infants should always be placed on their back when asleep.
2. Check crib size. Slats on a crib should not exceed 2 3/8 inches wide. If they are wider the baby could get their head stuck between the bars.
3. Have baby sleep on a firm mattress. Soft mattresses or pillows can lead to breathing problems and suffocation.
4. Put a tight fitted sheet over the mattress. Ensure that there are not a lot of extra fluffy items in the crib which could be a suffocation hazard.
5. Choose proper, warm sleep clothing. Make sure your baby is warm while sleeping. When the weather is colder put them in an infant sleep sack rather than using extra covers or blankets.
6. Keep the room cool. Warm temperatures present a SIDS risk. Make sure air is circulating through the room with a special nursery-designed fan.
