Now that almond milk is a familiar staple on the menu of dairy alternatives, the next addition to those alternatives could be oat milk. People invariably are quite wary of new things, especially new things that they might eat or drink. With something like oat milk, the obvious question is whether or not it’s safe. And if it is, the next question is how does it taste. And somewhere in there, we usually wonder just what this new thing is.
Made from strained oats, it’s an alternative to milk that contains no dairy or nuts. Oats are soaked in water, then blended and filtered to reduce or remove the oat solids. What’s left is oat milk. The advantage of oat milk is it’s low fat compared to dairy milk, and full of soluble fiber and proteinthan. It also has a pleasant taste. The high fiber content will satisfy the dietary need for fiber, including regulating bowl function and helping to reduce cholesterol levels.
The downside is oat milk is higher in calories than soy or almond milk. Sweetened oat milk is obviously much more calorie dense, but even sugar-free oat milk still tops out the calorie counter compared to the other options. Also, those sticking to grain-free diets for any reason will probably want to stick with the other milk alternatives compared to oat milk.
Tired of almond and soy milk? The next new dairy alternative is oat milk. Seriously. #HealthStatus
