Book Review: The Longevity Factor by Joseph Maroon, MD
Many people over human history have been searching for the fountain of youth, the rest of us just want to age in the healthiest way possible. Have you been teased enough by the media with some of the latest research on the possibility of increasing your life span and putting off disease? If that is what you are interested in you should give this book a read.
The Longevity Factor – How Red Wine and Resveratrol Activate Your Longevity Genes is written by a neurosurgeon that lays out the latest research on aging in a reader friendly fashion. Dr. Maroon eliminates the confusion of scientific studies simplifying the language and explaining what was learned in a clear and precise manner. Dr. Maroon chronicles the very latest research on how science is starting to understand longevity genes, how the aging process works, and what foods and supplements can affect aging.
His main focus is on natural plant substances, polyphenols – resveratrol, found in grapes and red wine. Research is showing that grapes that are grown more naturally without a huge amount of interference by men produce a crop that has a higher concentration of polyphenols which in turn promote good health.
Once Dr. Maroon lays out an overview of research findings, and how the aging process works he dedicates chapters to specific diseases; for example Diabetes, cardio health, overweight and others. Towards the end of the book he lays out his plan for aging and health, what foods you should eat and even provides recipes.
When I read a book I keep some of those “post it” flags with me and mark great sections or paragraphs that I want to come back and read thru one more time. This book was full of flags by the time I finished. I found all kinds of interesting and new information that I wanted to spend further time reviewing.
Dr. Maroon shares insights in to his own life keeping the feel of the book personal. For a non-scientific person like me who has a working knowledge of health I found this book fun, engaging and easy to read.
